Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, has emphasized the need for fair trade and domestication in the country’s cooperation with China. Speaking at a China-Africa Ministerial meeting in Changsha, Tuggar stressed that true partnership means shared prosperity and called for stronger reciprocity in trade.

Tuggar emphasized the need for trade symmetry and industrial domestication in Africa-China cooperation. He called for value addition and industrial processes to take root within African economies, rather than outside them.

The Minister stressed that Nigeria’s engagement with China must serve as a launchpad for long-term economic sovereignty, with a focus on domesticating value addition across the entire supply chain.

Tuggar cited the Zungeru Hydropower Plant as an example of productive cooperation between Nigeria and China. He also mentioned the Lagos-Ibadan railway as a successful project that demonstrates the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.

“True partnership means shared prosperity, and it’s time for Africa’s voice to echo through the corridors of trade symmetry, industrial domestication, and future-facing innovation.

“Nigeria’s engagement with China must serve as a launchpad for long-term economic sovereignty”, Tuggar stressed.

The Minister’s call for fair trade and domestication reflects Nigeria’s desire to move beyond mere extraction of resources and instead focus on building its own economic capacity and industrial base. This approach could have significant implications for the country’s economic development and its relationship with China.
