NATIONAL OLYMPIC TRIALS: Senator Owan storms Benin City to rally Support for Athletes

The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh is in Benin City to lend his support to athletes participating in the All Nigeria Athletics Championships, the 2024 National Trials. As the trials are currently underway, the Minister emphasized the significance of this event in preparing the nation’s top athletes for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.

Senator Enoh expressed his admiration for the dedication and performance of the athletes, noting that many have achieved personal bests and earned qualifications for the Olympics during these trials.

“Our track and field athletes turned up for the National trials, and this is highly commendable,” he stated. “Some of them have earned qualifications for the Olympics, done their personal best, and much more at these National trials.”

“Our athletes have proven their mettle in athletics beyond the continent, and it is our place to give them all the needed support,” said Senator Enoh.

“This is an Olympic year, and track and field holds enormous potential for our nation.

We thank the leadership of the AFN, coaches, and our superstar athletes who keep breaking barriers to emerge as winners. The government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is solidly behind you.”

16 year old Weng Dachung from Jos was the star for today at the National Trials .
His stamina from the beginning to the end of the 5000 meter run was impressive.

He caught the attention of spectators and key sports administrators including Commodore Omatseye (RTD) , Chairman, AFN Competitions Management Committee and the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh.
The action point is to do everything needed to enable this talent fly beyond basic heights and become a long race legend in good time.

He is not just accessible but very approachable.

The Minister’s presence in Benin City underscores the importance of the National trials and the government’s dedication to fostering a supportive environment for Nigerian athletes as they prepare to compete on the global stage.

The 2024 Olympic Games will take place in Paris from Friday, Jul. 26, 2024 – Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024.
