As the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025, the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) is urging the government to protect journalists and uphold press freedom.

This is contained in a press release co-signed by Tobi Soniyi, Legal Adviser, IPI Nigeria & Chairman Advocacy Committee, and Ochiaka Ugwu, Secretary, Advocacy Committee on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

Key Demands:

  • Remove Obstacles: IPI Nigeria calls on the federal and state governments to remove all obstacles to journalism practice in Nigeria.
  • Protect Journalists: Security agencies should protect journalists instead of using the Cybercrimes Act to intimidate and harass them.
  • Fair Remuneration: Employers should provide fair remuneration to journalists, as unpaid salaries and poor pay threaten press freedom.

IPC commended journalists who continue to work professionally despite threats and challenges.

Celebrating Press Freedom
May 3rd every year marks a global celebration of press freedom principles, assessing media freedom worldwide, and honoring journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

IPI Nigeria says it remains committed to defending media freedom and supporting independent journalism wherever it is threatened.
