INEC Receives 110 Letters of Intent for New Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disclosed that it has received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general election. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this disclosure during the commission’s second quarterly consultative meeting with media executives in Abuja on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations, which are being diligently processed in line with electoral laws and guidelines just as Yakubu emphasized INEC’s commitment to transparency and fairness in the registration process, dismissing claims of compromising its independence.

The commission has acknowledged all requests received so far, except six recent ones that will be processed before the end of the week.
INEC will release the full list of associations seeking registration, including their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and names of their pro-tem chairmen and secretaries.

On upcoming electoral activities, INEC Boss announced that the Anambra State Governorship Election has been scheduled for November 8, 2025, with campaigning having begun on June 11 and set to continue until midnight on November 6.

For the Area Council Election in FCT, primaries for electing candidates with the parties are ongoing and will conclude on June 30, 2025, with elections to be held in 68 constituencies.

“The Commission will continue to update you on these and other electoral activities. I urge you to monitor these activities. At the same time, I wish to appeal to you to promptly upload your applications for accreditation of media personnel for the Anambra State Governorship election holding on Saturday 8th November 2025 as soon as the portal opens so that we can process and deliver your accreditation tags well ahead of the election”, Yakubu said, adding that INEC is finalizing details for outstanding by-elections and resumption of nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), which will be made public in the next 24 hours.

Professor Yakubu on behalf of the commission appreciated the media’s role in covering electoral activities and looked forward to their continued support.
