INEC Issues New Guidelines for Election Results Review, Processes 122 Party Registration Applications

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided an update on party registration and supplementary regulations and guidelines on the review of election results. Here are the key points:

In a press release signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC has received a total of 122 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, with 12 new applications received as of July 2, 2025.

The list of new applications, including names of associations, acronyms, addresses, and interim chairmen and secretaries, has been uploaded to INEC’s website and other platforms for public information.

INEC is processing the applications transparently and fairly, and will respond to applicants in line with the Electoral Act and Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.

INEC has provided clarity on Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022, which empowers the Commission to review declaration and return in elections that are not made voluntarily or done contrary to the law, regulations, and guidelines.

INEC has provided clear procedures and timelines for the review of election results, contained in Supplementary No.1 to the main Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections 2022.

INEC has appealed to associations seeking registration as political parties to maintain consistency in their proposed leadership and addresses to avoid delays in the consideration of their applications.
