India launches Commemorative Stamp in Nigeria for Mahatma Gandhi
The Indian High Commission in Nigeria and Nigerian Postal Service have released a Commemorative Stamp to honor Mahatma Gandhi of India.
At the commemoration of 150 years birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in Abuja, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Abhay Thakur urged people all over the world to employ non-violence approach in addressing their grievances.
His ideology
Mr. Thakur said that, Mahatma Gandhi’s ideology was very relevant to tackle the present global concerns of terrorism, armed conflicts and climate change.
“Mahatma Gandhi was not only the father of the Indian nation but also to the world, he left a lasting impression that he put across the world that violence does not brings solution to the problem but peace and co-existence are the best forms of bringing about socio economic development and prosperity.
“Gandhi also advocated all inclusive form of governance, respect of human right and the rule of law and adopt non-violence approach to address all forms of discrimination in the society,” the High Commissioner stated.
The Postmaster General, Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi, said it was important to celebrate this world Indian great Icon at this time that the world is facing insecurity challenges, urging governments and citizens of the world to live in peace and co-exist with each other for the benefit of humanity.
Diplomatic relations
According to him, Nigeria is ready to continue strengthening diplomatic relations with India in the areas of trade and investment and Information and Communication Technology ICT for the benefit of the two countries.
“Nigerian Postal Service is delighted to collaborate with India to issue commemorative postage stamps as tribute Mahatma Gandhi and India-Nigeria relationship.
“The significance of Postage Stamps is to convey message of issuing country to another especially with Nigerian and Indian relation since the two counties are members of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) making the stamps available in all the 192 member countries,’‘ Mr. Adegbuyi noted.
He was represented at the event by the Chief Operating Officer, Mrs. Loretto Nwakama.
The Nigerian Minister of Communications, Dr. Ali Pantami, who was represented by the Director Telecom and Postal Services, Mrs. Ngozi Ogujiofor commended India for the anniversary and also the relationship that existing between India and Nigeria.
The Minister, also called on Nigerians to follow the Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence approach to address their objectives.
Mahatma Gandhi, who led India to independence, has been the inspiration for non-violent movements for civil rights and social change across the world, including Africa.
Throughout his life, Gandhi remained committed to his belief in non-violence even under oppressive conditions and in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.
