Glasgow 2026: Enekwechi Wins Historic Gold as Amusan Takes Bronze, Nigeria Books Multiple Athletics Finals

Team Nigeria delivered another outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday, boosting the country’s medal haul with a historic gold medal by Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, a bronze by Tobi Amusan, and several qualifications for key athletics finals.
Enekwechi emerged as the star of the day after claiming Nigeria’s eighth gold medal of the Games in the men’s shot put with a season-best throw of 21.07 metres in the fifth round. The Nigerian co-captain edged New Zealand’s Tom Walsh in a closely contested event to finally capture the Commonwealth title after years of near misses.
In the women’s 100 metres hurdles, world record holder Tobi Amusan added another medal to Nigeria’s tally, finishing third in 12.60 seconds to claim bronze. Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas won the gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmons settled for silver in 12.41 seconds.
On the track, Samuel Ogazi produced one of the standout performances of the championships, winning his men’s 400 metres semifinal in 44.52 seconds—the fastest semifinal time ever recorded in Commonwealth Games history.
Nigeria also secured a second finalist in the men’s 400 metres after Edidiong Udo was promoted from third to second place following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson. Udo’s 45.55-second effort ensured Team Nigeria will have two athletes contesting the final.
Sprint sensation Udodi Onwuzurike also qualified for the men’s 200 metres final after clocking 20.22 seconds to finish second in his semifinal behind Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor.
Attention now shifts to the women’s 400 metres final, where Ella Onojuvwevwo is among the leading medal hopefuls. With a personal best of 49.47 seconds, she enters the race as one of the world’s top performers this season.
In the decathlon, Jami Schlueter remained firmly in medal contention after the opening day, occupying fourth place with 4,196 points following strong performances across five events.
Nigeria’s Unyima Uwak also impressed in the women’s T47 100 metres final, placing fifth with a season’s best time of 12.63 seconds.
With more finals and medal events still ahead, Team Nigeria continues to strengthen its position on the Commonwealth Games medal table.

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade watched the men’s 400 metres mixed relay and long jump events alongside Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Hon. Philip Shaibu, and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Vice President Chief Solomon Ogba.
The presence of the senior sports administrators underscored the Commission’s commitment to motivating Nigerian athletes as they continue their campaign for medals at the Commonwealth Games.
