The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has issued an official statement addressing public concerns over a viral video involving one of its patrol teams in the Central Business District of Abuja.l, Nigeria.

The Corps said the incident, which occurred on Thursday, April 16, 2026, involved its RS7.14 Central Business District Unit Command during a routine traffic enforcement operation. According to the statement, officers lawfully intercepted a vehicle for traffic violations, including overloading and failure to use seatbelts.

FRSC clarified that the situation escalated when the driver reportedly became non-compliant and disregarded lawful directives, creating tension that drew a crowd and heightened security concerns in the area.

Responding to allegations circulating online, the Corps firmly denied that any of its personnel assaulted or threatened the driver or passengers. It explained that the individual seen in the viral footage wielding an iron rod was neither affiliated with the driver nor the FRSC, but a passerby whose actions have been misinterpreted.

The agency emphasized that its officers demonstrated professionalism and restraint throughout the encounter, opting to de-escalate the situation to prevent disorder and ensure public safety amid growing crowd tension.
“The decision to disengage should not be seen as weakness, but as a strategic move to protect lives and maintain order,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its commitment to road safety and lawful enforcement, the FRSC urged the public to disregard misleading narratives and continue to cooperate with its personnel in the discharge of their duties.

The statement was signed by Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, on April 18, 2026.
