FG’s Free Train Ride Initiative Eases Transportation Costs Amid Economic Challenges

In a bid to cushion the impact of high transportation costs exacerbated by the removal of the petrol subsidy, the Federal Government has launched free train rides across all Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) passenger routes.
This initiative, which commenced today, aims to bring relief to millions of Nigerians during the festive season.
Speaking at a press briefing at Kubwa Station, the Acting Managing Director of the NRC, Mr. Ben Iloanusi, praised the federal government for the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention. “This is a grand idea, and we thank the federal government for this thoughtful palliative. The Nigerian Railway Corporation is fully committed to ensuring the success of this program,” he stated.
The free train rides will operate until January 5, 2025, with an estimated 340,000 passengers expected to benefit. On average, 20,000 passengers will ride daily across six major routes, including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos Mass Transit, and Warri-Itakpe.
Mr. Iloanusi emphasized the need for passengers to cooperate with NRC staff and adhere to boarding protocols. “Passengers with valid tickets and identification will be prioritized. For those unable to secure tickets, we’ve put a profiling system in place to ensure everyone has fair access,” he explained.
To address potential challenges, the NRC has deployed additional security personnel and implemented measures to prevent ticket hoarding, such as limiting purchases to two tickets per person. “We are prepared to manage the crowds. Our staff and security teams are working tirelessly to maintain orderliness and ensure everyone can travel safely,” he reassured.
Acknowledging past technical challenges with the e-ticketing system, Mr. Iloanusi assured passengers that significant improvements had been made. “We’ve upgraded our systems and enhanced customer support. If you face difficulties, our contact center is available to assist,” he said.
Mr. Iloanusi emphasized its humanitarian intent. “This is about goodwill and ensuring Nigerians enjoy a good Christmas and New Year. It’s not just about money; it’s about the heart and spirit of the federal government,” he remarked.
The initiative has drawn mixed reactions from commuters. While many expressed gratitude for the free rides, some highlighted operational challenges.
Blessing Adeoye, a commuter on the Abuja-Kaduna route, praised the federal government for the gesture but noted some issues. “The free train ride is a blessing, especially with transport costs being so high. However, the train experienced some delays due to technical problems during the trip. I hope the NRC can address these issues quickly to make the experience smoother,” she said.
With free rides set to run until early January, the federal government’s initiative is providing much-needed relief to commuters, offering an affordable and accessible mode of transportation during the festive season.
As the program unfolds, the NRC is committed to addressing any challenges to ensure a seamless experience for all passengers.
