Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has pledged to strengthen the Federal Government’s communication and engagement with the media to improve public understanding of its economic policies and reform agenda.

Oyedele made the commitment during a meeting with the leadership of the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) in Abuja, where he emphasized the need for greater collaboration between government and financial journalists to ensure Nigerians are adequately informed about economic policies and decisions.

According to the minister, widespread misunderstanding of government economic policies has contributed to misconceptions among members of the public, making it imperative for government institutions to communicate more effectively and proactively.
“There are a lot of things we are doing, and there is a lot more we will do. We want to be the ones projecting our activities and policies rather than allowing others to define the narrative,” Oyedele said.

He explained that the meeting was part of efforts to improve the efficiency of government-media relations and establish a framework for more effective communication and public engagement.

The minister stressed that transparency and accountability remain central to public service, noting that government has a responsibility to explain its policies and decisions to citizens, including areas where there may be differing opinions.

He disclosed plans to launch public education initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ understanding of economic issues, adding that the media would play a crucial role in ensuring the success of such programmes.

Oyedele said an informed public is better positioned to hold government accountable through constructive and evidence-based feedback, rather than relying on misinformation or unfounded allegations.

He cited misconceptions surrounding Nigeria’s foreign reserves as an example of how limited understanding of economic concepts can lead to misplaced criticism and unrealistic expectations regarding government spending.

While emphasizing the importance of critical journalism, the minister clarified that the government was not seeking favorable coverage but rather balanced, factual and constructive reporting that accurately reflects the impact of its policies.

He also announced plans for more regular interactions with journalists as part of a renewed communication strategy designed to improve public confidence and understanding of government economic reforms.

Speaking on behalf of FICAN, the association’s chairman, Bassey Udo, commended the minister for maintaining an open and accessible relationship with the media, particularly during discussions surrounding tax reform initiatives.

Udo assured the minister of FICAN’s continued support in promoting public awareness of government policies, describing the media as a critical link between government and citizens.

He noted that closer collaboration between government and the media had become increasingly important amid current economic challenges, as accurate information remains essential in combating misinformation and helping citizens understand ongoing reforms.

The FICAN chairman also sought the ministry’s support for the association’s programmes, including its quarterly publication, BusinessLine, which focuses on public enlightenment on finance, business and economic issues.

He further informed the minister that FICAN plans to invite him as Special Guest Speaker at its Annual General Meeting scheduled for February next year, where discussions will focus on the theme, “The Fiscal Authority as a Catalyst to Realizing the $1 Trillion Economy Agenda.”

Udo reaffirmed the association’s commitment to working with the Ministry of Finance and other economic stakeholders to support policies aimed at building a stronger and more inclusive Nigerian economy.
