Defence Ministry Inaugurates Strategic Committees to Drive Security Reforms, Veterans Welfare

Abuja, April 29, 2026 — The Federal Ministry of Defence Nigeria has inaugurated three high-level technical committees as part of efforts to strengthen national security architecture, enhance military planning, and improve the welfare of veterans.
The Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), performed the inauguration on Wednesday at the Ministry’s headquarters, Ship House, Abuja, underscoring the Federal Government’s resolve to transition from policy intentions to concrete, actionable implementation in addressing defence and security priorities.
The newly inaugurated committees are the Technical Committee on Integrated Border Security System, the Defence Sector Capital Requirements Plan Committee, and the Committee on Veterans Welfare and Institutional Reform.
According to the Minister, the initiative reflects a coordinated strategy to respond to evolving security challenges, boost operational readiness, and ensure that retired military personnel receive the recognition and support they deserve.
On border security, Musa stressed the need for a “smart, intelligence-driven, and technology-enabled” system to manage Nigeria’s vast and complex land and maritime boundaries. He tasked the committee to review existing frameworks, identify operational gaps, and propose integrated solutions that enable real-time information sharing and effective inter-agency collaboration.
Addressing the Defence Sector Capital Requirements Plan Committee, the Minister highlighted the importance of strategic investment planning. He directed the committee to develop a realistic and prioritised 5–10 year capital investment framework aligned with national security goals and fiscal realities, including infrastructure assessment, capability gap analysis, and future projections based on emerging threats and technologies.
On veterans’ welfare, Musa emphasized the need to preserve the dignity and identity of former service personnel. He said the committee would focus on strengthening welfare systems, improving access to support services, and developing a standardized national dress code for veterans to promote uniformity and align with global best practices.
The Minister charged committee members to carry out their assignments with professionalism, transparency, and accountability, stressing the need for stakeholder engagement and value-driven outcomes. All committees have been given one month to submit comprehensive reports with actionable recommendations and implementation roadmaps.
He assured them of the Ministry’s full support in executing their mandates.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Richard Pheelangwah, commended the Minister’s leadership and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing national security and improving the welfare of military personnel and veterans. He urged committee members to approach their tasks with patriotism and a strong sense of national duty.
The inauguration marks a significant step in the Federal Government’s broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s defence framework, strengthen institutional coordination, and build national resilience.
