The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has welcomed the conviction and life sentence handed down by a Canadian court to the individual responsible for the killing of two young Nigerians, describing the judgment as a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.

The offender was sentenced by the Ontario Court of Justice to life imprisonment without eligibility for parole for 25 years after being found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm.

They case stemmed from a deadly nightclub shooting in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, on July 23, 2022, which claimed the lives of Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, NiDCOM said that while no court verdict could bring back the deceased or erase the pain suffered by their loved ones, the judgment represented a measure of accountability and justice.

The Commission paid tribute to the two victims, describing them as hardworking and ambitious young Nigerians with bright futures ahead of them.

Chibueze Momah, who was 22 years old at the time of his death, had recently graduated with a diploma in Computer Programming and aspired to build a successful career in the technology industry. He was the only son of his family and had hoped to support and reunite with relatives in Canada.

Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe was reportedly carrying out his duties as a security personnel when he lost his life in the tragic incident.

NiDCOM recalled that shortly after the shooting, its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, visited the bereaved families to offer condolences and assure them of the Commission’s support during their period of mourning.

The Commission commended the efforts of Canadian law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities for their diligence in investigating, prosecuting and securing the conviction of the offender. It also praised the resilience and patience shown by the families throughout the lengthy legal process.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerians living abroad, NiDCOM pledged to continue advocating for justice whenever Nigerian citizens become victims of crimes in foreign countries.

The Commission extended its condolences once again to the Momah and Amos-Arowoshegbe families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
