The Bangladesh government has reiterated its commitment for partnership to revive the textile industry in Nigeria.

In a parley with Nigerian media on Wednesday October 30, 2019 in Abuja, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, Md. Shameem Ahsan said, “Nigeria has past glory in textile industry, and we are working on a partnership to revive the industry. Bangladesh is today the second largest exporter of garment in the world, second to China”.

News Dot Africa reported that the High Commissioner had earlier expressed his country’s commitment to partner in reviving the textile industry in Nigeria.

Ahsan who was a Special Guest at the Calabar Carnival official flag off on Monday October 20, 2019 in Calabar, told Governor Ayade that his country will be very willing to partner with the Cross River state garment factory.  The governor who expressed great delight to have Bangladesh participate in this year’s carnival has said, “Is not here by accident, as the second largest exporters of garment in the whole world, we are bringing them to partner with the cross river State garment factory. We are here to develop a business from the carnival visit. I am going to be visiting Bangladesh after this carnival to meet with their industrialists to say, come partner with us and take advantage of the African growth opportunity and ship out garment out of Nigeria to Americas under the adua program.

“By your visit, Bangladesh is taking over the garment business from India, you have my 100 percent assurance that Bangladesh will take that business,” Ayade assured.

It will be recalled that in March 2019, during a meeting between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the textile industry stakeholders, the CBN had announced that it has placed restrictions on access to forex for importers of textiles and other clothing materials, as part of the government’s effort towards reviving Nigeria’s textile industry.

“Effective immediately, the CBN hereby place the access to FX for all forms of textile materials on the FX restriction list. Accordingly, all FX dealers in Nigeria are to desist from granting any importer of textile material access to FX in the Nigerian Foreign exchange market,” the Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele said.

Bangladesh has today become world fastest growing economy, evolving from the Agrarian economy in 1970’s to export-oriented industrialized nation.
