Armed Forces to Receive 30–80% Salary Increase from September as Defence Ministry Commends Tinubu

The Federal Government has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, with implementation scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026.
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, announced the development on Tuesday, describing the decision as a landmark step by the Tinubu administration to improve the welfare, morale and operational effectiveness of military personnel.
He said the salary review had remained a priority since the inception of the current administration and acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of the new pay structure as a reflection of the government’s commitment to rewarding the sacrifices of troops defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to the minister, about 250,000 military personnel will benefit from the revised salary package.
He explained that officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will benefit from a 50 per cent increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 per cent increase.
The minister noted that the salary adjustment forms part of broader efforts to strengthen troop welfare as security forces continue operations against banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
He also said the Federal Government would sustain investments in modernising the Armed Forces through improved welfare, acquisition of weapons and deployment of advanced technological tools to enhance operational effectiveness.
Urging military personnel to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities, the minister described the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their dedication and sacrifices in safeguarding the nation.
