China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening governance, fighting corruption and promoting global development through sustained political and institutional reforms, following the conclusion of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in Beijing.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, stated this in an article titled “Leading Chinese Modernization Steadily Forward Through the Party’s Self-Revolution,” where he highlighted the importance of the CPC’s commitment to full and rigorous self-governance in advancing China’s modernization agenda.

According to the Ambassador, the plenary session adopted a resolution outlining major measures for strengthening Party discipline, improving governance and sustaining the fight against corruption.

He explained that the resolution provides a strong political foundation for building a stronger China and achieving national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization.

Yu noted that since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, the Party had intensified efforts to promote internal reforms, strengthen accountability and tackle corruption, adding that these measures had enhanced its capacity for self-correction, renewal and institutional development.

He maintained that China’s development achievements demonstrate the connection between effective governance and national progress.

The Ambassador cited China’s position as the world’s leading manufacturing nation, its industrial expansion, the growth of a middle-income population exceeding 400 million people and the country’s reported success in eliminating absolute poverty as evidence of the impact of its governance approach.

He further observed that China’s development has significant implications for the global economy, noting that the country has contributed approximately 30 per cent of global economic growth for several consecutive years.

According to him, the strategic direction established at the Fifth Plenary Session would create opportunities beyond China by promoting international trade, strengthening global supply chains and supporting economic recovery.

On China’s engagement with developing countries, Yu stressed that Beijing does not seek to export its development model or impose political conditions on other nations.

He said China respects the sovereign right of every country to determine its development pathway in accordance with its national circumstances, while remaining open to exchanging governance experiences with governments, political parties and organisations worldwide.

The Ambassador also highlighted China’s commitment to the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiative as frameworks for addressing shared international challenges.

Speaking on China-Africa relations, Yu described Africa as an important partner in China’s modernization journey and a key force within the Global South.

He recalled that the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit produced the Ten Partnership Actions announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping to advance modernization and deepen cooperation between China and African countries.

He also pointed to China’s implementation of zero-tariff treatment for all African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, effective May 1, 2026, describing the policy as an opportunity to expand African exports, strengthen trade relations and promote industrial transformation.

Yu said China was equally deepening exchanges with African political parties on governance and public administration, with the broader objective of strengthening the China-Africa community with a shared future.

On Nigeria, the Chinese envoy described the country as Africa’s most populous nation and a major driver of the continent’s economic and development prospects.

Reflecting on his more than two years as China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu said he had observed a strong desire across Nigerian society for good governance, political stability and an independent development pathway.

He noted that Nigeria’s pursuit of strategic autonomy, economic reforms, foreign investment, international trade and technological innovation reflected efforts to strengthen its capacity for sustainable development.

The Ambassador further stated that under the strategic guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the China-Nigeria comprehensive strategic partnership had entered a new phase of high-quality development.

He said both countries were strengthening exchanges on governance, aligning their development priorities and expanding practical cooperation across different sectors for the benefit of their citizens.

Yu reaffirmed China’s determination to sustain its reform agenda, pursue high-quality development, expand international economic engagement and contribute to global peace and shared prosperity.

He added that China’s commitment to opening up would continue to create opportunities for other countries, particularly developing economies.

The Ambassador expressed China’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria and other Global South countries through equality, mutual learning and mutually beneficial cooperation, towards promoting economic transformation and collective development.
