Nigeria has joined representatives of nations and international Olympic stakeholders in Los Angeles, United States, for a pre-Games meeting ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games, as the country begins early preparations for the global sporting event.
The Nigerian delegation comprised the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, and the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel.
The meeting provides an opportunity for participating nations to engage with the organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, exchange information and coordinate preparations ahead of the competition.
Speaking on Nigeria’s participation, Olopade said early planning, institutional coordination and strategic engagement with Olympic organisers were essential to the country’s ambition of delivering an improved performance at the Games.
He stressed that preparations for the Olympics must begin long before athletes arrive at competition venues, noting that deliberate planning and adequate support were crucial to achieving success.
According to him, Nigeria is determined to build on lessons from previous Olympic Games and ensure that its athletes receive the necessary support, facilities and competitive opportunities to excel.
“Our ambition is not simply to participate, but to prepare thoroughly and compete with distinction,” Olopade said.
He added that the joint participation of the NSC and NOC leadership underscored the importance of collaboration between the country’s sports development authorities and Olympic movement in preparing Team Nigeria for the Games.
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games are scheduled for July 14 to 30, 2028. The event will mark the third time Los Angeles has hosted the Summer Olympics, having previously staged the Games in 1932 and 1984.
The NSC said it would continue working with the NOC to establish a coordinated preparation framework aimed at ensuring that Nigerian athletes are ready to compete at the highest level.
The Commission maintained that early engagement and effective planning would be central to building a competitive Team Nigeria for LA28.
The statement was signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the NSC Director-General, on October 21, 2026.
