Kida’s Letter to FIBA Raises Questions Ahead of NBBF Elections

The controversy surrounding the October 15, 2026, Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) elections has intensified following a letter from federation president, Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida, seeking clarification from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) on the selection of the international representative on the incoming board.
In a letter dated October 12, 2026, and addressed to the chairman of the NBBF Electoral Committee, Kida disclosed that he had engaged FIBA on the issue but was still awaiting an official response.
The development has raised concerns over the eligibility and recognition of the individual entitled to occupy the position reserved for the most senior Nigerian holding an elected position within a FIBA body.
At the centre of the dispute is retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu, President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, who has challenged aspects of the electoral process and is seeking recognition as the international representative on the NBBF Board for the 2026–2030 tenure.
According to Kida, the matter was discussed during a physical meeting with FIBA on September 18, 2026, on the sidelines of the FIBA Women’s World Cup, where the international body reportedly assured the NBBF that an official response would be provided.
However, the continued absence of a formal clarification has raised questions about why the determination of the representative’s position remains unresolved despite the provisions of the NBBF Constitution.
In his correspondence, Kida acknowledged Ahmedu’s request for recognition but maintained that neither the NBBF president nor the Electoral Committee had the authority to override FIBA’s position.
He argued that the federation must await an official response from the international governing body before determining the matter.
Kida also cited Ahmedu’s previous recognition as the international representative on the NBBF Board in 2021, referencing a letter issued by FIBA at the time.
The previous recognition has prompted further questions about whether any relevant circumstances or eligibility requirements have changed ahead of the 2026–2030 board tenure.
Stakeholders are now seeking clarity on the specific constitutional provisions and criteria that will determine who occupies the position in the incoming administration.
The Nigeria Basketball Network, in its statement signed by its Head of Media, Maxwell Kumoye, said the issue must be resolved transparently and in accordance with the federation’s constitution.
The statement stressed that the determination of the international representative should be based on applicable rules, official communication from FIBA and verifiable records of elected positions within the international basketball governing structure.
With the NBBF elections scheduled for October 15, the timing of FIBA’s response has become increasingly important.
The statement warned that proceeding with the election without resolving the dispute could expose the composition of the incoming board to further questions and possible controversy.
It also questioned whether a clarification issued after the election would adequately address the matter if the electoral outcome had already affected the allocation of the board position.
The Nigeria Basketball Network called on the relevant electoral authorities to ensure that the basis for determining the representative was clearly established before the process was concluded.
It further urged that the relevant correspondence and applicable rules be made available to the appropriate authorities to promote transparency and prevent allegations of preferential treatment.
The controversy comes as Nigerian basketball prepares for a new four-year administration, with stakeholders expecting the electoral process to be conducted in a manner that upholds the federation’s constitution and strengthens confidence in its leadership.
The statement maintained that the central issue was not merely who occupies the international representative’s seat, but whether the process for determining the occupant is transparent, constitutionally sound and fair to all concerned.
It called for clear answers before the polls, stressing that resolving the dispute ahead of the election would help prevent avoidable disagreements over representation and eligibility in the incoming NBBF Board.
The Statement was signed by Maxwell Kumoye, Head of Media, Nigeria Basketball Network, on October 14, 2026.
