DICAN Workshop to Examine China’s Poverty Alleviation Model for Nigeria

The Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) is set to organise a one-day workshop aimed at examining China’s poverty alleviation strategies and their relevance to Nigeria’s development efforts.
The invitation which was signed by the DICAN Chairman, Idehai Frederick, and General Secretary, Emeka Amakor stated
that the workshop, scheduled for August 25, 2026, at Rotunda Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, will bring together diplomatic reporters, editors, diplomats, policymakers, development partners and other key stakeholders.
Themed “Nigeria’s Poverty Alleviation Efforts: Adopting China Models and Its Relevance in a New Era: The Place of Policymakers, Development Partners, Key Stakeholders and Diplomatic Reporters,” the event is expected to deepen understanding of China’s economic transformation and poverty reduction experience and explore lessons applicable to Nigeria.
The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, is expected to deliver a goodwill message at the workshop.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, will also deliver remarks and is expected to be conferred with the DICAN Grand Patron honour.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Ahmed Dunoma, will be conferred with the DICAN Patron title respectively.
Among the resource persons expected at the workshop are Prof. Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, Dr. Austin Maho and Dr. Charles Onunaiju, alongside other experts and stakeholders.
According to DICAN, the workshop is designed to examine key aspects of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s economic and poverty alleviation strategies and identify actionable frameworks that could be adapted to the Nigerian context.
It will also seek to equip diplomatic reporters, editors and news executives with deeper contextual knowledge to facilitate more informed and constructive reporting of China-Nigeria relations.
Another objective is to foster dialogue among Nigerian policymakers, youth leaders, media scholars, members of the diplomatic community, development partners and other stakeholders on strategies for addressing poverty and promoting sustainable development.
