SGF Akume’s Commitment to Nigeria–Serbia Relations Signals a Strategic Path for Economic Growth

The recent reaffirmation by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, of Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening relations with the Republic of Serbia deserves commendation. At a time when Nigeria is seeking to expand its global partnerships and attract greater foreign investment, this renewed diplomatic engagement is both timely and strategic.
Nigeria and Serbia share a relationship that dates back to the era of the former Yugoslavia, built on mutual respect, friendship, and the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement. These historical ties provide a solid foundation upon which both nations can build a more dynamic and mutually beneficial partnership.
Senator Akume’s assurance of the Federal Government’s readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation demonstrates the administration’s recognition that diplomacy must increasingly translate into tangible economic opportunities. Beyond diplomatic exchanges, the focus should be on expanding trade, promoting investments, encouraging technology transfer, and strengthening collaboration in critical sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, energy, and sports.
The remarks by the Serbian Ambassador, His Excellency Jugoslav Vukadinović, are equally encouraging. His acknowledgement of the longstanding contributions of Serbian companies to Nigeria’s development and his commitment to encouraging Serbian investors to return to Nigeria reflect growing confidence in the country’s economic potential. Such investments have the capacity to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development agenda.
As Nigeria continues to implement the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, strengthening bilateral relations with countries that have demonstrated genuine interest in our development should remain a priority. Strategic partnerships must be driven by shared economic interests and a commitment to delivering measurable benefits for citizens.
The renewed Nigeria–Serbia engagement should therefore serve as a catalyst for broader cooperation that goes beyond diplomatic protocol. It should result in concrete agreements, increased business exchanges, enhanced cultural cooperation, and sustainable development initiatives that strengthen the economies of both nations.
Senator Akume’s leadership in advancing this relationship reflects Nigeria’s determination to pursue productive international partnerships
With sustained political will and effective implementation, the Nigeria–Serbia partnership can become a model of mutually beneficial cooperation that supports economic growth, regional stability, and international goodwill.
