Glasgow 2026: Amusan Sets Commonwealth Record as Nigeria Eyes More Medals on Day Seven

Team Nigeria delivered another impressive performance on Day Seven of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with world record holder Tobi Amusan blazing into the women’s 100m hurdles final in record-breaking fashion, while Nigerian athletes secured multiple places in key athletics finals to keep the country’s medal hopes alive.
Amusan sent a strong warning to her rivals after storming to victory in her heat in 12.19 seconds, the fastest time ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games despite a +3.8m/s tailwind. She comfortably finished ahead of South Africa’s Marione Fourie and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill to book her place in the final, where she will be aiming to win an unprecedented third consecutive Commonwealth Games title.
Nigeria also celebrated a double qualification for the men’s 400 metres final. Samuel Ogazi dominated the opening semifinal, powering home in 44.52 seconds to finish ahead of Botswana’s Lee Eppie and Jamaica’s Zandriom Barnes.
Joining him in the final is Edidiong Udo, who delivered a composed performance from lane eight, clocking 45.53 seconds. Initially third across the finish line, Udo was elevated to second place following the disqualification of Jamaica’s Antonio Watson.
In the women’s 400 metres, Ella Onojuvwevwo produced another commanding display, pulling away in the closing stages to win her semifinal in 51.47 seconds and qualify for the final. Charlotte Henrich of Wales and Jamara Patterson followed in second and third places respectively.
However, Patience Okon-George and Esther Elo Joseph narrowly missed out on qualification after finishing fifth and sixth in the opening semifinal.
Nigeria’s medal prospects also received a boost in the men’s decathlon, where Jami Schlueter remained firmly in contention after three events. He sits fourth overall with 2,592 points, just 13 points behind the bronze medal position after posting 10.70 seconds in the 100m, 7.16m in the long jump and 15.35m in the shot put.
In the field events, Chinecherem Prosper Nnamdi secured a place in the men’s javelin final after producing a throw of 75.27 metres on his final attempt to claim the last qualifying spot in challenging windy conditions.
The evening session promises more excitement for Team Nigeria. Udodi Onwuzurike will compete in the men’s 200 metres final, while Olayinka Olajide and Jennifer Obi Chukwuka will battle for places in the women’s 200m final.
Defending Commonwealth champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will also be in action in the men’s shot put final as he seeks to retain his title, while para-athlete Unyima Uwak will contest the women’s T47 100m final in pursuit of a podium finish.
