Tinubu Honours Aguiyi-Ironsi at 60th Memorial, Hails Legacy of Unity and Selfless Service

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Nigeria’s First Military Head of State, the late General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, describing him as a symbol of patriotism, courage, discipline and unwavering commitment to national unity.
The President’s message was delivered by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, during the 60th Memorial Celebration held in Umuahia, Abia State, to commemorate the late military leader’s enduring legacy six decades after his death.
Speaking on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Musa said Aguiyi-Ironsi distinguished himself as an exceptional military officer whose career was marked by loyalty, professionalism and dedication to duty.
He noted that the late General rose through the ranks to become the first Nigerian General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Nigerian Army before assuming office as Nigeria’s first Military Head of State during one of the country’s most turbulent periods.
“Although his tenure was brief, he demonstrated a firm commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state. He understood that leadership demands sacrifice, placing the interest of the nation above personal considerations,” the President stated through the Minister.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to national unity, security and the strengthening of democratic institutions, stressing that the ideals exemplified by Aguiyi-Ironsi remain relevant to Nigeria’s development.
“The Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to preserving the unity of Nigeria and strengthening the institutions that safeguard our democracy. Our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths, and it is through mutual respect, tolerance, justice and shared purpose that we will continue to build a peaceful and prosperous nation,” he said.
The President also extended the nation’s sympathy and appreciation to the family of the late General, while commending the organisers of the memorial for preserving the memories of Nigeria’s national heroes.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Aguiyi-Ironsi family and the continued peace, unity and prosperity of the country.
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, also paid tribute to the late military leader, describing him as a patriot who led the nation during a difficult chapter in its history.
“General Aguiyi-Ironsi was a fine officer and a patriot who found himself at the helm during a turbulent storm in our national journey. Sixty years after, his memory reminds us that the unity of Nigeria was bought with significant sacrifice. We must honour his memory not just with words, but by ensuring that the peace, cohesion and institutional integrity of our Armed Forces are zealously guarded by every generation,” Obasanjo said.
Host Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, military authorities and other distinguished guests for gathering in Umuahia to honour one of the state’s most celebrated sons.
Governor Otti said Abia remains proud of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s courage and ultimate sacrifice for national unity, adding that his legacy continues to inspire his administration’s commitment to good governance, justice and national cohesion.
The event was attended by former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, serving and retired military officers, lawmakers, traditional rulers and other dignitaries.
