774 LGAs, One Dream: FG Launches Renewed Hope Unity Cup to Discover Next Generation of Football Stars

Nigeria’s largest grassroots football tournament is here. The National Sports Commission, in partnership with stakeholders, has unveiled the “Renewed Hope Unity Cup”– a nationwide competition that will feature teams from all 774 Local Government Areas
Unveiled in Abuja, the tournament is designed to take football development to the grassroots, create jobs, and use sports as a tool for national unity under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
National Convener, Hon. Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, said the competition is about more than goals and trophies.
“The Renewed Hope Unity Cup is a bold investment in our youths. It will discover talent in villages and cities, build coaching capacity, stimulate local economies, and promote peace through football,” Kwande stated.
Key highlights of the initiative include:
Massive Reach as every LGA in Nigeria will be represented.
Visibility for Players, because all matches will be professionally produced and streamed live for clubs, academies, agents, and international scouts to watch.
Teams will receive welfare support which will include full kits – jerseys, boots, balls, bibs, cones – plus insurance and match allowances for players and officials.
Coach Development through a nationa nationwide _Train-the-Trainer Programme that will also certify coaches from each LGA in partnership with the NFF and National Institute of Sports. They will then train others in their communities.
5. *Economic Impact*: The Cup is projected to boost transport, hospitality, tourism, media and sports marketing across host communities.
Kwande confirmed that *player registration and kit distribution will begin October 1*. The maiden edition will feature *men aged 18-21*, with a women’s category planned for future editions.
Chairman of Plateau FA, Yahaya Kwande, and NFF Board Member, Barr. Paul Edeh, hailed the initiative as a “watershed moment” for Nigerian football, noting it will give rural talents a pathway to national prominence.
Sports journalist Victor Irole said the slogan *“One Goal. Nigeria.”* captures the spirit of the tournament.
“There is nothing that unites Nigerians more than football. This Cup will strengthen that bond while changing thousands of lives,” he said.
The tournament will run under the theme:
“One Nation. One Vision. 774 Local Governments. Endless Opportunities. Football Unites. Football Empowers. Football Builds the Nation.”
Funding will come from the Federal and State Governments, corporate partners, development agencies, and international football bodies.
