Foreign Affairs Ministry Celebrates Nigerian Women Diplomats, Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Inclusion

Abuja, June 25, 2026 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has joined the international community in commemorating the International Day for Women in Diplomacy, paying tribute to Nigerian women who have made significant contributions to the country’s foreign policy, global engagement, and diplomatic achievements.

The Ministry noted that Nigerian women have continued to play pivotal roles in advancing the country’s interests across major international platforms, including the United Nations, African Union, and ECOWAS. Their efforts, it said, have strengthened Nigeria’s influence in global governance, promoted South-South cooperation, advanced the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and supported the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the statement, Nigerian women diplomats have consistently demonstrated exceptional competence and strategic leadership in diverse areas such as trade negotiations, cultural diplomacy, humanitarian interventions, and international development cooperation.
The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women within the diplomatic service. It highlighted the growing number of women serving as ambassadors, directors, and heads of multilateral organizations, describing the trend as evidence of deliberate efforts to mainstream gender inclusion and ensure equal opportunities within the foreign service.
The celebration, the Ministry said, serves not only as recognition of the achievements of women diplomats but also as a renewed commitment to removing barriers that hinder women’s advancement in diplomacy and international relations.
It further called on government agencies, civil society organizations, the private sector, and international partners to support initiatives that promote mentorship, leadership development, and gender equality in diplomacy.
The Ministry emphasized that Nigeria’s foreign policy would be stronger and more representative when the talents and perspectives of all citizens, particularly women, are fully utilized.
Extending congratulations to Nigerian women serving both at home and abroad, the Ministry commended their dedication and impactful service to the nation, noting that their achievements continue to inspire young girls across the country to pursue careers in diplomacy and international service.
