The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Nigerian Army for its sustained efforts in providing a secure and conducive environment for corps members and NYSC formations across the country.

General Nafiu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, where he emphasized that the success of the NYSC scheme is closely tied to the security and stability maintained by the nation’s security agencies.

According to the NYSC Director-General, the scheme cannot effectively carry out its mandate in an atmosphere of insecurity. He praised the 3 Division for consistently discharging its responsibilities, noting that no orientation course in states under the division’s jurisdiction has ever been cancelled due to security challenges.

Highlighting the contributions of corps members to national development, Nafiu disclosed that more than 7,000 corps members are currently serving in Plateau State, contributing significantly to socio-economic growth through their various places of primary assignment.

He reiterated that since its establishment, the NYSC has remained a vital platform for promoting national unity, integration, and social cohesion.

He said the scheme has fostered inter-tribal marriages, encouraged cultural exchange, and created opportunities for youth empowerment and employment generation.

The Director-General also underscored the role of corps members in strengthening critical sectors of the economy, particularly healthcare and education. He noted that corps doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals continue to support hospitals nationwide, while teachers deployed under the scheme help bridge manpower gaps in public schools.

Seeking continued collaboration, Nafiu appealed to the Nigerian Army to sustain its support in creating an enabling environment for the scheme to fulfill its mandate effectively. He added that the NYSC is currently implementing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing service delivery.

In his response, Major General Folusho Oyinlola commended Nafiu for the achievements and initiatives introduced since assuming office as Director-General of the NYSC. He described him as a worthy ambassador of the Nigerian Army and praised the NYSC Plateau State Coordinator, staff, and corps members for their commitment and dedication.

The GOC noted that the positive impact of the NYSC remains evident across the country and encouraged the management of the scheme to continue building on its successes.
“Testimonies abound about the positive impact of the NYSC. Keep up the good work, and I am confident you will continue to take the scheme to greater heights,” Oyinlola stated.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army to ensuring the safety and security of corps members serving within its area of responsibility at all times.
