Nigerian Navy Seizes 1,800 Litres of Suspected Illegal Diesel in Ibeju-Lekki Raid

The Nigerian Navy has intensified its clampdown on illegal petroleum activities with the confiscation of about 1,800 litres of suspected illegally acquired Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) during an intelligence-led operation in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
The operation, carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Lekki, took place at about 10:30 p.m. on May 6, 2026, at the Mobido Axis of Ibeju-Lekki following credible intelligence on the activities of suspected oil thieves and illegal petroleum product dealers operating within the area.
According to the Navy, the patrol team swiftly mobilised to the identified location believed to be used as a storage point for illegally acquired petroleum products. The suspects reportedly fled the scene on sighting naval operatives, abandoning the products.
A thorough search of the location led to the discovery and confiscation of 10 containers of 30 litres each and five drums containing substances suspected to be AGO, estimated at approximately 1,800 litres.
The confiscated products were evacuated to FOB Lekki for further necessary action in accordance with operational procedures, while the operation was concluded in the early hours of May 7.
The Nigerian Navy said the successful operation demonstrates its sustained commitment to combating illegal petroleum-related activities and curbing economic sabotage within the maritime environment.
The Navy reiterated that ongoing intelligence-driven operations across the nation’s maritime domain are aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of operation and protecting Nigeria’s economic assets.
