The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, on Wednesday joined dignitaries, clergy, and Catholic faithful to celebrate the 20th Episcopal Ordination anniversary of Augustine Obiora Akubeze in Benin City.
The event, held on April 22, 2026, at St. Paul Catholic Church, attracted prominent religious leaders and personalities, including the Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Gabriel G. Dunia, alongside other bishops, priests, and members of the religious community.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shaibu described Archbishop Akubeze as a spiritual leader whose influence has extended beyond the Catholic Church to the broader Christian community. He noted that the Archbishop’s leadership has provided moral clarity and stability, particularly during challenging social and moral periods.
The former Edo State Deputy Governor praised Akubeze as “a true shepherd whose voice continues to inspire hope, strengthen faith, and promote unity among believers,” adding that his ministry has positively impacted lives across different segments of society.
According to Shaibu, the Archbishop’s commitment to truth, justice, and service has established him as a moral compass, with his interventions on national and societal issues contributing to peace-building and ethical leadership.
In his homily, Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji подчеркed the weight of episcopal responsibility, describing it as a call to sacrifice and authentic service. He warned against reducing the role of a bishop to mere ceremony, urging Church leaders to remain steadfast witnesses to the Gospel through humility and action.
“The office of a bishop is not ceremonial but deeply sacrificial,” Ugorji said, calling for unwavering dedication to truth and service.
Reinforcing the message, Shaibu commended Archbishop Akubeze for exemplifying humility, courage, and steadfast commitment throughout his 20 years in episcopal ministry. He further described the cleric as a unifying figure who continues to bridge the gap between the Church and society.
The celebration concluded with prayers for continued strength, wisdom, and grace for Archbishop Akubeze as he continues his pastoral mission.
