The National Institute for Sports (NIS), Surulere, Lagos Centre, has admitted and matriculated 232 students across its various departments, marking the end of a one-year suspension of its admission process.
The development follows a strategic pause ordered by the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the institute, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to allow for a comprehensive reorganisation of the institution’s admission procedures and academic framework.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony, Shaibu said the newly admitted students are the first beneficiaries of reforms aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at repositioning the institute as a leading global sports training centre.
“We have completed the administrative phase of repositioning the NIS, which is why we have reopened admissions for new intakes,” he said. “This is the first set, and they are fortunate because we have restructured everything—from the lecturers to the curriculum—as part of efforts to transform the institute into a world-class institution.”
The former Edo State Deputy Governor stressed the importance of discipline and adherence to rules, urging the students to uphold high standards of conduct throughout their academic journey.
“You must not only be law-abiding but also disciplined, as this is essential to producing competent and responsible coaches and sports administrators,” he added.
Shaibu further disclosed that admissions into other zonal centres of the institute, as well as the Athletes Development Centre in Abuja, will commence in due course.
The reforms at the NIS are expected to strengthen capacity development in Nigeria’s sports sector and enhance the quality of training for future professionals in the industry.
