The Federal Character Commission (FCC), has stepped up its commitment to data protection and transparent digital governance, reinforcing its partnership with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) following a high-level engagement in Abuja.
The renewed collaboration came to the fore during a courtesy visit by the NDPC’s National Commissioner/CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, who led senior officials to the FCC headquarters, where they were received by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.
Speaking during the meeting, Omidiran applauded the NDPC’s role in advancing data privacy awareness nationwide, stressing that the FCC remains committed to upholding global standards in data governance.
She noted that, as a custodian of sensitive national data, the Commission recognises the critical importance of compliance in building trust, ensuring fairness, and improving service delivery.
Omidiran also highlighted ongoing digital transformation efforts within the Commission, including plans to launch an official FCC website, adding that collaboration with the NDPC would ensure secure and compliant systems aligned with international best practices.
In his remarks, Dr. Olatunji described the FCC as a key player in Nigeria’s data ecosystem, underscoring the need for strict adherence to the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 to boost transparency and accountability.
He further assured the Commission of NDPC’s support through capacity-building initiatives, including training and certification of staff as Data Protection Officers, as well as access to the Virtual Privacy Academy.
Both agencies agreed to strengthen cooperation through structured compliance frameworks, knowledge-sharing platforms, and targeted training programmes aimed at safeguarding citizens’ data and enhancing institutional efficiency.
Reacting to the development, FCC Spokesperson, Ademola Lawrence, said the partnership marks a significant step in the Commission’s reform agenda.
“This collaboration underscores the FCC’s resolve to align its operations with evolving data protection standards while strengthening public confidence in its processes. It is a strategic move toward building a more transparent, accountable, and digitally compliant institution,” Lawrence stated.
