Abuja, April 14, 2026 — The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, on Monday received Nigeria’s victorious Under-18 and Under-20 male handball teams following their outstanding performance at the IHF Trophy Zone 3 tournament in Lomé, Togo.
Speaking during the reception at his office in Abuja, Olopade described the teams’ dominant display at the regional championship as a major boost for male sports development in Nigeria, noting that it has restored confidence in the country’s male athletes.
“Your performance in Togo has shown that handball is a progressive sport that deserves strong backing from both the private sector and the Commission,” he said.
The NSC boss highlighted the significance of the victory, especially at a time when Nigeria’s female athletes have been the dominant force in international competitions. He described the recent success of the male handball teams as “refreshing” and a sign of a promising future.
Olopade also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential to challenge traditional powerhouses on the continent, particularly North African teams, citing the level of talent displayed during recent competitions, including the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
He commended the leadership of the Handball Federation of Nigeria under its president, Jibril Saidu, for its commitment to developing the sport and nurturing young talents.
“I want to appreciate the dedication of the federation’s leadership, which has shown remarkable passion in growing handball in Nigeria,” he added.
The Director General further assured the federation of the Commission’s continued support ahead of the forthcoming continental championship later in the year.
In his response, Saidu expressed gratitude to the NSC for its support and recognition, affirming that the federation is focused on clinching the continental title in the next phase of competition.
The Nigerian teams emerged champions in both the U-18 and U-20 categories at the regional tournament, underlining the country’s growing strength in handball across age grades.
