Nigeria and Brazil Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Historic Agreements

Nigeria and Brazil have solidified their bilateral relationship with the signing of several key agreements during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil on August 25, 2025. The agreements aim to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, energy, defense, and climate change.

Key Agreements are
– Bilateral Air Services Agreement to foster connectivity and promote trade and tourism between the two countries.
– Agricultural Cooperation to expedite sanitary and phytosanitary negotiations to expand bilateral trade, with Brazil to conduct a Pest Risk Analysis for importing unhulled sesame and dried hibiscus from Nigeria.
– Fertilizer Production to strengthen fertilizer supply chains through potential joint investments, enhancing food security in both countries.
– Energy Cooperation to advance energy transitions toward sustainable and inclusive systems, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
– Defense Cooperation to enhance military training, intelligence sharing, and defense technology.
– Climate Change to vooperate on climate action, energy transition, and environmental resilience, with Nigeria to participate in COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

Economic Benefits
The agreements are expected to unlock new economic opportunities, including
– $4.3 billion in private-sector investment: Drive agricultural development and modernization in Nigeria.
– $1 billion Green Imperative Program to transform Nigeria’s agricultural value chain through technology transfer, capacity building, and service centers.

Global Cooperation
The two countries emphasized the importance of:
– Multilateralism to strengthen global governance institutions and promote South-South cooperation.
– United Nations Reform to support comprehensive review of the UN Charter and reform of the Security Council.
– World Trade Organization Reform to  ensure predictability, legal certainty, and safeguard policy space for development.
