NAWIS Elect New Representatives to Sports Federation

The National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS), on Saturday held its elective congress tò select new representatives to the Weightlifting Federation and Table Tenis Federation.

In the election that took place at the Media Centre in the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja, the Director of Federation of Elite and Athletics Department (FEAD), Mrs. Mbora Ikanna, representing the Director General of the National Sports Commission Hon. Bukola Olopade, declared open the session of the election. The atmosphere was filled with èxcitement and anticipation as the contestants prepared to take on the responsibility of leading the association towards its goals.

Olopade in his opening address emphasized the importance of upholding the objectives and mission of the association. He reminded all present that NAWIS was founded with the purpose of empowering and promoting the involvement of women in sports at all levels. Therefore he said, “it is crucial for the newly elected leaders to ensure that these core principles are at the forefront of their actions.”

Furthermore, Hon. Bukola urged the contestants to implement the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President, as ìt aligns with the vision of NAWIS. “The current administration has shown greater commitment toward the development of sports in Nigeria, and this has opened up new opportunities for women in the field. It is now the responsibility of the leaders in NAWIS to take advantage of these opportunities and work towards achieving the set objectives.”

DG Bukola stressed the importance of Unity and teamwork among the members of NAWIS. He reminded the contestant that success can only be achieved through collaboration and support for each other. He advised that the leadership of NAWIS must foster a sense of camaraderie and inclusivity amòng its members to create a strong and cohesive association.

Speaking earlier, Professor Mrs. Florence Bola Adeyanju, founder of NAWIS reaffirmed the associations commitment to uplifting and Empowering women in sports. She also reminded the newly elected representatives of their primary objectives to uphold the integrity and status of the association.

Prof. Bola emphasized the importance of maintaining self-worth and not succumbing to “beggar’s attitudes. ” She urged the representatives to carry their own resources and not rely on others for financial support when attending board meetings or competitions. This, she believes, will bring honour and respect rather than being seen as mere beggars.

Furthermore, Mrs. Adeyanju reminded the representatives to take up their role as mentors and supporters to the female athletes. She advised that they should act as sisters, mothers, and friends to these athletes, extending thir support to the male athletes as well. She highlighted the importance of taking care of the girl athlete as their core responsibility and èncouraged the representatives to focus on this aspect.

The members who contested for these positions are Alhaja Waseelat Tijani, who won against Huldah Nkwacha for Weightlifting Federation, and Mrs. Joy Ibekwe Kingsley, who also emerged victorious over Onileku Chinedu in the Table Tennis Federation. These women have shown great dedication and determination to serve in these positions, and we have no doubt that they will continue to promote and empower Nigerian women in sports.

NAWIS has been recognized both locally and internationally for its efforts in empowering women in sports. The association has been actively involved in organising various events, workshops and seminars to provide opportunities for women in the sports industry. With the newly elected representatives, NAWIS will undoubtedly continue to make strides towards promoting gender equality in sports and providing a platform for women to excel.

The President of NAWIS Professor Adefunke Suleiman gave the vote of thanks. She praised the members for their solidarity and unity that NAWIS has displayed throughout the election process. Also for their unwavering support and commitment towards the association goals and objectives. The election was a reflection of their hard work and determination, and she acknowledged their efforts with heart-felt gratitude.

Professor Suleiman extended her gratitude towards the National Sports Commission, for their continuous support and encouragement which have been vital in NAWIS growth and success, with their backing, she said, NAWIS has been able to make significant strides in promoting women in sports and breaking gender barriers.

Mrs. Adefunke also recognised the contribution of the founder, Professor Adeyanjufor her unwavering support and visionary leadership. Her guidance and dedication, she said, have been crucial in shaping NAWIS into the powerhouse it is today. Without her guidance NAWIS would not have been able to achieve such remarkable success, she said.

She also saw the need to appreciate Press men who have been instrumental to spreading the news about NAWIS activities. She enthused that their coverage has not only brought awareness to NAWIS but has also inspired and motivated countless women to pursue their dreams in the world of sports.
