DIED IN DIASPORA, BURIED IN NIGERIA: A Stark Reality

By Oru Leonard

The trend of Nigerian leaders seeking medical treatment abroad while their fellow citizens suffer due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure is a stark reminder of the country’s development challenges. The recent passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London, following in the footsteps of others like former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, former Senate President Joseph Wayas, and late Mrs Stella Obasanjo, highlights this disparity.

While our leaders have access to world-class medical facilities abroad, many Nigerians struggle to access basic healthcare services due to the lack of essential medical equipment, infrastructure, and personnel in local hospitals. This raises questions about the priorities of our leaders and the allocation of resources.

The neglect of healthcare infrastructure in Nigeria is a pressing concern. Our hospitals often lack basic equipment, and our healthcare workers are underpaid and overworked. This situation is exacerbated by the brain drain of medical professionals seeking better opportunities abroad. In addition uncompleted health facilities are litered around the nation.

The fact that many Nigerian leaders prefer to seek medical treatment abroad rather than investing in local healthcare infrastructure raises questions about their commitment to the welfare of their citizens. It is imperative that our leaders prioritize the development of our healthcare system and ensure that quality medical care is accessible to all Nigerians.

As we reflect on the legacy of our leaders, we must also acknowledge the systemic issues that plague our healthcare system. It’s time for our leaders to take concrete steps to address the neglect of our healthcare infrastructure and ensure that Nigerians have access to quality medical care at home, rather than having to seek it abroad.

The question remains: when will our leaders prioritize the healthcare needs of Nigerians and invest in local infrastructure? The answer to this question will determine the future of our healthcare system and the well-being of our citizens.

I applaud the Former Vice President, under late President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, Professor Yemi Osinbajo who exhibited trust in a Lagos Hospital and did surgery when he was in power. Such remarkable examples should be exhumed and appropriated.
