The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, today, received in audience the Chinese Foreign Minister, H.E. Wang Yi, at the Foreign Affairs Ministry Abuja, Nigeria, on January 9, 2025. This visit marks a crucial step in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Nigeria and China have a rich history of cooperation, dating back to 1971, when they established diplomatic relations. Over the years, their collaboration has yielded fruitful results in various fields, including trade, investment, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange.
Ambassador Tuggar acknowledged China’s remarkable progress in economic development, technological innovation, and global leadership, while also highlighting Nigeria’s significant transformations driven by its vision to become a more prosperous, peaceful, and democratic nation.
During the meeting, the two ministers discussed ways to deepen bilateral engagement, particularly in areas such as trade facilitation, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges. Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the One-China-Principle and assured continued support for China at the international stage.
The visit follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to China in September 2024, during which four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed. In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Yusuf noted that Nigeria is committed to implementing the terms of these MoUs, which are currently at various stages of implementation.
As the two nations continue to work together, they aim to elevate Nigeria-China relations to new heights, fostering a brighter future for their peoples.
