The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria has issued a reassuring statement regarding the safety of Nigerians residing in Libya. Contrary to reports published in The Punch newspaper on November 3, 2024, claiming Nigerians were being targeted, the Ministry confirms that Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities without harassment from Libyan authorities.

This clarification comes on the heels of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) verdict, which condemned the Libyan Football Association for mistreating the Nigerian team and officials during a Nations Cup Qualifying Match in Libya.

Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the wellbeing of Nigerian citizens worldwide remains a top priority for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The government is committed to safeguarding their interests at all times.

This statement aims to alleviate concerns and provide accurate information to the public, dispelling misinformation and speculation surrounding the situation.

In a broader context, the relationship between Nigeria and Libya has faced challenges in recent years, particularly regarding migration and human trafficking. The Libyan migrant crisis has had devastating consequences, with many Nigerians falling victim to modern slavery. However, in this specific instance, the Ministry’s statement seeks to reassure Nigerians that their citizens in Libya are safe.

For now, it seems that diplomatic efforts are focused on maintaining stability and ensuring the protection of Nigerian citizens abroad.
