Parents whose wards are schooling at the Navy officers wives association school Abuja are groaning over increase in school fees irrespective of the court injunction preventing the school from doing so.
News Dot Africa Correspondent reports that the school turned back students and shut out parents and their wards who paid fees as contained in the teller given to the students at the end of last term.
Students who resumed today at 12 noon and 2:30 pm were allowed to check in whether there have paid or not. The the school accountant told a parent that the increase which she had not paid would be recognized as outstanding payment but her son was checked in.
But that was not the case with students who came after 2:30 pm as they were not allowed into the school compound.
Parents however said the school authorities addressed students who checked in earlier and told them that they will be sent back on Tuesday 2 of May, 2023 if their parents failed to pay the increase on their fees.
Some parents who spoke to newsmen said that the problem was not just the amount involved but the inability of the school authorities to discuss with the students, “the reason why we are complaining is because this is the second time school fees is been increase within a term.”

Despite a court injunction restraining them from implementing an increase in school fees, Navy officers wives association secondary school Abuja turned back students and shut out parents and their wards who paid the usual fees as contained in the teller given to the students at the end of last term less the contentious increment.
Students who returned to school between 12 noon and 2:30 pm were lucky to be checked in irrespective of if they had paid or not. The finance officer had explained to a parent that the increment which she didn’t pay would be recognized as outstanding payment but her son was checked in.
However, those who came in later did not enjoy such grace as they were denied entrance. A parent who spoke on condition of anonymity said the authorities had threatened to send those who were earlier cleared without the increment home by Tuesday 2 May 2022.
A parent who spoke to newsmen said the issue was not just the amount involved but the failure of the school authorities to dialogue with parents, adding that this is the second increment in a session which had led to the PTA seeking a restraining order.
Another parent who claimed anonymity said that since the takeover of the affairs of the school by the current president of NOWA, the school has not been the same and it is quite unfortunate that after over 13 years of the existence of the school, the current president of NOWA who is due to leave by May will want to destroy all that the school has stood for over the years and called on the top hirachy of the Navy to wade into the current injustice and lack of obedience to court orders by the NOWA President and her team by staying status quo on all fees increment untill the determination of the case in court
The parents called on the school authorities to obey the court order and allow their children resume school pending when the matter is resolved in court or through dialogue.
According to parents, over the holidays, they got messages asking them to pay 50,000 naira more than the initial fees on the students teller.
