NIGERIAN WOMEN CONGRATULATE THE LEADERSHIP OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

As part of advocacy towards ensuring that Nigerian Women get their rightful place in the scheme of National Development, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Aisha Buhari on Wednesday, 23rd February, 2022 led Nigerian Women on a historic visit to the Senate Chambers and the House of Representatives to witness the laying of the Report of the Constitution Review Committee.

The First Lady was accompanied by the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs Dame Pauline Tallen, OFR, KSG, Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Country Representative of UN Women to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Comfort Lamptey, former Ministers of Women Affairs & Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina and Hajiya Inna Maryam Ciroma. Others on the delegation included top women government functionaries and the private sector, as well as from the Civil Society to include Women in Politics Forum, 100 Women Lobby Group, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture, FOMWAN, Catholic Women Organization, representatives of the National Council of Women Societies, National Association of Qomen Journalists amongst others.
3. The Team was received on arrival by the Chairman of the Senate on Women Affairs Senator Betty Appiafi and the Chairman House Committee on Women Affairs, Hon. Yomi Onanuga, Hon. Onyejeocha and the Chief Whip of the House of Representative Hon. Mongono.
4. I want to use this opportunity to congratulate the Leadership of the 9th National Assembly led by Distinguished Senator Dr. Ahmed Lawan and the Speaker Rt. Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila. The promises made to the visiting delegation is a true demonstration of the gender sensitivity of the members of the 9th National Assembly as a whole to bring about equity in Nation building.
5. On behalf of Nigerian women, I want to sincerely congratulate the Joint Committee on Constitution Review for doing an amazing job in the issues and concerns of women as captured in the final document that was laid before the National Assembly today. Nigerian women are confident that the promises made by the leadership of both Chambers will be fulfilled and put Nigeria on the credible path as the true giant of Africa.
