Zero accidents made possible by appropriate regulation, inter-agency cooperation – NCAA DG

The director general of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Musa Nuhu has attributed zero accident in commercial aviation in the last five years to appropriate regulation, media support and inter-agency cooperation.

Nuhu stated this during the opening of the annual training programme of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) at Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria.

The director general who was represented by Kaduna regional manager of NCAA, Mr. Sani Mohammed said the development was “against the background of consistent successes in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Re-certification, various International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audits and the Transport Security Administration (TSA) approvals.

“It will however, be appropriate to mention that this feat is an industry feat and not only NCAA. The other agencies similarly deserve commendation for their roles in the zero accident run.
“The airline operators in Nigeria have taken self regulation of their operations a notch higher and much more seriously. This is due to increased awareness, quality staff and additional investment in training,” he added.

Predicting a bright future for the industry, he said “It is clear there is no utopian situation in any human endeavour. Let me use this opportunity to mention that NCAA clocked 20 years this January, 2020.
“In this journey, the Authority has had seven substantive Director Generals and three on acting capacities. The history of the organisation cannot be written without the laudable contributions of our heroes.”

He said while the agency is “clashing the cymbals and clinking glasses, one of the groups that have been with us in this journey are members of the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents.

He said after the training, “it is expected that there will be continuous improvement in the approach and reportage of the industry …and a paradigm shift from approvals to developmental journalism.”

The director general said it will be a significant development if developmental issues affecting aviation are brought to the front burner.
“Aviation Industry in Nigeria has consistently craved for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Our esteemed practitioners can do well to in a most lucid way highlight investment baskets in the industry.
“The issue could border on any segment of aviation that can impact the industry by way of policy shift or elicit a course of action.
“In doing this, the agencies will be thoroughly challenged and consequently provide an industry that every Nigerian will be proud of,” he added.
