WHO Reports 11 Cases of Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in Cambodia

The World Health Organization (WHO), has reported 11 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus in Cambodia between January 1 and July 1, 2025. Seven of these cases were reported in June, marking an unusual monthly increase.

Eleven (11), cases have been reported, with six fatalities, resulting in a case fatality ratio (CFR) of 54%.

Cases have been reported from seven provinces in Cambodia, including Siem Reap, Takeo, Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Kratie, Prey Veng, and Svay Rieng.
Males account for 63% of the cases, with three cases reported in children under five years old, two cases between five and 18 years old, and six cases in adults aged 18-65 years.

All cases have reported direct exposure to sick or dead poultry.

WHO Risk Assessment noted that the current risk to the general population posed by this virus is assessed as low.

For those occupationally exposed to the virus, such as farm workers, the risk is considered low to moderate, depending on the measures in place.
