Oru Leonard
The world is facing an unprecedented threat from organized cybercrime, with staggering costs and consequences that continue to grow. To combat this, the United Nations has introduced the Convention against Cybercrime, a landmark treaty that aims to strengthen international cooperation and provide a framework for countries to fight cybercrime.
The Alarming Reality of Cybercrime
– $16 billion: Suspected internet crime losses in the US increased by 33% from 2023 to 2024, exceeding this amount.
– 25%: Increase in cybercrime cases reported by Eurojust over the same period.
– 71%: Chief information security officers surveyed believe small organizations have reached a critical tipping point in securing themselves against cyber risks.
The Convention’s Key Provisions
– International Cooperation: Global framework for collecting and sharing digital evidence.
– Human Rights Safeguards: Protection for victims of online abuse, especially women and children.
– Future-Proof: Defines crimes based on activities and outcomes, not technologies used.
The Convention will open for signature on October 25-26, 2025, in Hanoi, Viet Nam. Governments worldwide are urged to sign up and invest in a safer digital future.
