The Transmission Company of Nigeria has disclosed that one of its 100MVA 132/33kV transformers at the Apo Substation in Abuja developed a technical fault in the early hours of Friday, leading to temporary supply challenges on some affected feeders.
According to the company, the transformer tripped at about 12:56 a.m. on May 23, 2026, on differential relay indication while operating on no load. Initial checks revealed oil spillage around the transformer, prompting further investigation by TCN’s maintenance team.
The investigation later identified faults on the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the affected 100MVA power transformer.
TCN stated that its engineers have successfully restored the red phase bushing, while repair works are still ongoing on the yellow phase to fully stabilize the transformer.
Following the development, the company said it has directed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to temporarily source electricity supply for customers connected to the affected outgoing 33kV feeders from alternative TCN feeders within AEDC’s franchise area pending the completion of repairs.
The company assured customers that efforts are underway to fully restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
TCN also apologized to AEDC and electricity consumers affected by the incident, assuring that its engineers are working diligently to resolve the fault and minimize disruptions.
