The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has stated that the National Youth Games holds special significance as a beacon of hope for the revitalization of the sports industry in Nigeria.
Senator Enoh made the statement today, at the opening ceremony of the 8th edition of the Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, as he emphasized the importance of grassroots sports development in nurturing young talent and strengthening the country’s position in global sports.
In a ceremony that brought together young athletes and officials from across the nation, the Minister highlighted the significance of grassroots sports development in nurturing future champions and promoting national unity.
He reiterated the role of grassroots sports development in building a strong sports sector, noting that this event plays a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing young talent.
“In today’s world, sports play a crucial role in creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy. This is why the current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), is committed to repositioning the sector for optimal performance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Reflecting on the lessons learned from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Senator Enoh called for a renewed focus on grassroots development. He stressed the need for a framework that goes beyond talent identification, to one that ensures comprehensive nurturing from the grassroots to elite levels of competition.
The Minister further commended the efforts of Delta State Governor, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his continued support of grassroots sports, particularly at a time when hosting such a national event is challenging. With 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials cleared to participate— the highest number ever recorded for the National Youth Games— this edition promises to be historic.
Senator Enoh also expressed his appreciation to the Governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their unwavering support and sponsorship of their state delegations.
He called on athletes and officials to demonstrate the spirit of fair play, urging them to compete cleanly and abide by the rules.
“This year’s edition of the National Youth Games presents yet another opportunity to initiate the process of athlete development for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and the setting of world records,” he added.
The Honourable Minister concluded by officially declaring the 8th National Youth Games open on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wishing all participants a smooth and successful competition.
