The High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Sohail Ahmad Khan, has reaffirmed Pakistan’s resilience, achievements, and enduring partnership with Nigeria during celebrations to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day and Defence Day.
The colourful event, attended by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Defence Attachés, senior officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, government officials, and members of the diplomatic community, highlighted Pakistan’s historic journey since its independence in 1947.
In his keynote address, High Commissioner Khan expressed pride in representing a nation that has risen from humble beginnings to become a beacon of resilience, progress, and global stature.
“Pakistan stands tall on the world stage, contributing to global peace, economic growth, and human development,” he said. “Our role in international forums, counter-terrorism cooperation, and peacekeeping where over 200,000 Pakistani troops have served since 1960 speaks to our unwavering commitment to global stability.”
He also underscored Pakistan’s economic strengths as one of the world’s leading producers of cotton, rice, sugarcane, wheat, mangoes, and oranges, as well as a globally renowned hub for sports goods.
He further highlighted Pakistan’s natural wonders, including the world’s second tallest peak, K2, and five of the 14 highest mountains above 8,000 meters.
Turning to matters of security, High Commissioner Khan paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces, ranked 12th globally in the 2025 Global Firepower Index. He emphasized their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, where more than 80,000 lives have been lost, and celebrated their success in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.
“Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state with strategic forces that ensure peace and security,” he noted. “The courage and resolve of our armed forces continue to inspire the nation and contribute significantly to global peace.”
On bilateral relations, the envoy described Pakistan-Nigeria ties as a model of friendship, brotherhood, and trust.
He highlighted the countries’ growing trade, defence, and security cooperation, noting that the relationship has strengthened across all military services and sectors.
“As we commemorate our independence and defence, we must also renew our commitment to innovation, peace, and prosperity,” he urged. “Pakistan and Nigeria will continue to stand together, unbreakable in the face of challenges.”
The ceremony ended with patriotic chants of “Pakistan Armed Forces Zindabad, Pakistan–Nigeria Relations Zindabad, Pakistan Paindabad”
