One Million Commercial Tricycles may be banned by Kano

Due to serious security breaches, the Kano state government may soon ban the operations of commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Adaidaita Sahu in the state.
This position was made known to Transport Day newspaper by the newly appointed Managing Director of the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), Hon. Baffa Babba Dan Agundi in his Kano office earlier in the week.
Checks by Transport Day around the Kano city shows that the Bajaj brand of tricycles from India, distributed by DAG Industries is the dominant brand with about 90 percent of the market. It is estimated that about one million commercial tricycles operate in the state.
It would be recalled that the Kano state government had earlier banned the use of motorcycles for commercial transportation, a development that brought about the proliferation of commercial tricycles due to the teeming population of the ancient city.
The MD told Transport Day that “there is possibility that they will be banned, and there is also possibility that they may be allowed to continue if the security council of the state headed by his Excellency the Governor of Kano state decides, we will implement it.
“If the government allows for reformation, still okay. The reason of the possibility of banning them is because of the excesses of their illegal activities, kidnapping, robbery, bag snatching, phone snatching. No responsible government will sit down and watch this continue to happen”.
