NSCC/ NDE visit centre to appraise Entrepreneurship skills enhancement training for older persons

National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) and National Directorate of Employment led by the DG NSCC, Dr Emem Omokaro, on Thursday visited Entrepreneurship skills enhancement training centers in Bwari Area Council in the FCT to assess the Entrepreneurship skills enhancement training for 230 older persons In Senior the led indigenous crafts program.

According to NSCC’s statement, the Goal of the initiative is to engage senior citizens and challenge them mentally and physically as well as enhance their quality of life by teaching them these skills as a means of livelihood.

The Training is aimed at ensuring income security, enhancement of capacity and then spotlighting the contributions of older persons, as well as changing the negative stereotypical perceptions that older people have nothing more to contribute to the society. She noted that their focus is on older persons in the rural areas.

She also disclosed that the Training is happening across the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory in the country, and is taking place in most central senatorial districts, nearer where the older people are.

“A lot of things informed the programme, one is changing the negative perception about older people. Our campaign is to reorient the perception of older people that they are a waste and any investment in them is a cost that will not yield any dividend, that’s one of it

“To also enhance their capacity to earn more, so income security. We are bringing opportunities for them to do what they know to do and do it better, in a healthier environment, with confidence and then earn more.

The indigenous crafts training workshops for Seniors is being conducted across the 36 states of Nigerians and coordinated by consultants with State & Zonal Supervisors with Monitoring by NSCC Technical teams.

Dr Emem Omokaro and her team visited the centre to observe proceedings as well as interacting with senior citizens in Bwari about the impact of the program in other to ascertain their level of satisfaction.

The initiative is also set to award grants to selected Senior citizens engaged in indigenous ventures.
