The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), hosted the Urhobo Leadership Forum on August 14, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the drive to improve welfare systems for senior citizens across Nigeria.
The Forum, led by its President, Mr. Peter Igho (MFR), visited the NSCC to explore avenues for a collaborative partnership that could significantly impact the lives of the elderly.
Mr. Igho, a renowned public figure, expressed gratitude to the NSCC Director-General, Dr. Emem Omokaro, for her support at their recent event and underscored the importance of synergy between government agencies and civil society organizations.
He reiterated the Forum’s commitment to working closely with the NSCC to implement initiatives that would uplift the quality of life for senior citizens in the country.
In her response, Dr. Omokaro praised the Urhobo Leadership Forum for its proactive approach and expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the partnership.
She detailed the NSCC’s ongoing efforts, including income security and livelihood empowerment programs, health and social care initiatives, and the establishment of senior centers aimed at combating loneliness and promoting recreation.
“The visit by the Urhobo Leadership Forum underscores the growing recognition of the need for a united front in addressing the needs of our senior citizens,” Dr. Omokaro stated.
“We look forward to a fruitful partnership that will expand our reach and improve our services for the elderly.”
The both parties unanimously agreed to establish a joint working group to explore specific areas of collaboration, such as advocacy, resource mobilization, and the development of community-based programs.
This alliance is expected to pave the way for stronger partnerships between civil society and government bodies in the ongoing quest to enhance the welfare of senior citizens in Nigeria.
