No Fresh Kuwait Ban on Nigerian Domestic Workers, MFA Spokesperson Clarifies

Abuja, Aug. 1, 2026 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified reports alleging that the Government of Kuwait recently imposed a ban on the recruitment of Nigerian domestic workers, stating that the reports are inaccurate and do not reflect the current situation.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, explained that there is no fresh ban by the Kuwaiti authorities on Nigerian domestic workers.
According to him, the Embassy of Nigeria in Kuwait City had, several years ago, formally requested the suspension of the recruitment and deployment of Nigerian domestic workers and housemaids to Kuwait pending the resolution of concerns relating to the welfare, protection and working conditions of Nigerians employed in the Gulf country.
Ebienfa noted that the current situation is a continuation of measures earlier initiated by the Nigerian Embassy to safeguard the safety, dignity and rights of Nigerian citizens seeking employment abroad, rather than a new restriction imposed by the Government of Kuwait.
He further stated that Nigeria and Kuwait remain committed to constructive diplomatic engagement on labour and migration issues, adding that both countries will continue discussions aimed at establishing a mutually beneficial framework that guarantees fair recruitment practices, adequate legal protection and decent working conditions for Nigerian workers.
The spokesperson urged the public and media organisations to verify information from official sources before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation capable of causing unnecessary anxiety among Nigerians residing in Kuwait and their families.
