Nigeria has taken a significant step towards bridging the digital divide by becoming the first African country to launch the Africa-BB-Maps initiative, a project led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The initiative aims to map and improve broadband infrastructure across Africa, promoting digital inclusion and smarter data-driven planning.
The Africa-BB-Maps project will enable the creation of a unified framework for broadband data collection, infrastructure mapping, and collaborative policy formulation.
The initiative brings together key stakeholders from government agencies, telecom operators, technology innovators, and international development partners to develop a national roadmap for broadband deployment.
By identifying unserved and underserved communities, the project will pave the way for more inclusive and connected Nigeria, aligning with the country’s National Broadband Plan targets.-
The project will facilitate targeted investments and harmonized regulations across borders, driving connectivity to remote and rural areas.
By providing credible data on existing infrastructure gaps, the initiative will enable efficient resource allocation, attracting investments and promoting socio-economic development.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) spearheaded the launch event in Abuja on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. With this initiative, Nigeria is positioning itself as a digital infrastructure leader on the continent, setting the pace for other African nations.
