Nigeria to Receive 119 Benin Bronzes from Netherlands in Historic Repatriation
Nigeria is set to receive 119 Benin Bronzes from Netherlands
This marks the single largest physical return of Benin Antiquities directly linked to the 1897 British punitive expedition. The decision follows a formal request by the National Commission for Museum and Monuments Nigeria (NCMM) in September 2022 and subsequent discussions between the Netherlands and Nigeria.
The return of the Benin Bronzes is a significant step towards rectifying the historical injustices of colonialism. The bronzes, which include plaques, personal ornaments, and figures, are an important part of Nigeria’s cultural heritage and were looted by British soldiers during the 1897 expedition.
The Netherlands’ decision to return the Benin Bronzes is a testament to the country’s commitment to cultural restitution and its recognition of the historical injustices inflicted upon Nigeria. The Dutch government’s fair-mindedness and the immense support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria have been instrumental in making this repatriation possible.
The first batch of Benin Bronzes is expected to arrive in Nigeria by June this year. The NCMM has expressed its gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, as well as the Honorable Minister, Hon. Hannatu Musawa, for their invaluable support in making this significant development possible.
This repatriation is a significant milestone in the efforts to return cultural artifacts looted during colonialism. It sets a precedent for other countries to follow and marks an important step towards healing the wounds of colonialism and promoting cultural understanding and cooperation between nations.
