The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several parts of the country from Tuesday, June 9 to Thursday, June 11, 2026, while urging residents and operators in key sectors to take necessary safety precautions.
According to the three-day weather outlook issued by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Monday, northern states are expected to experience mostly sunny conditions with patches of clouds, alongside isolated morning thunderstorms and rainfall in some areas. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are forecast to affect states including Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Yobe and Katsina during the forecast period.
In the North-Central region, cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine are expected, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely to affect the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, Benue and Kogi states, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.
The southern region is expected to remain predominantly cloudy, with isolated morning showers forecast over parts of Rivers, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and other coastal states.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected to become more widespread later in the day across much of the region throughout the three-day period.
For Thursday, NiMet projected increased thunderstorm activity across parts of Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Enugu, Bayelsa, Delta, Lagos, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states during the morning, with moderate rainfall extending to Ebonyi, Imo, Abia and Edo states later in the day.
The agency warned that strong winds may precede rainfall in areas where thunderstorms are expected and advised residents to secure loose objects to prevent damage. Motorists were also cautioned against driving during heavy rainfall due to reduced visibility and increased road hazards.
NiMet further advised members of the public to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and avoid sheltering under tall trees, which could be vulnerable to falling branches or collapse during severe weather conditions.
Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency for effective flight planning and operational safety.
The agency encouraged residents to remain updated through its regular weather forecasts and advisories as weather conditions evolve across the country.
