Nigeria Seeks Stronger Ties with Türkiye at D-8 Commission Meeting

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with fellow developing nations and deepening bilateral relations with Türkiye following its participation in the 51st D-8 Commission Meeting held in Ankara.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nigeria’s D-8 Commissioner, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, participated in the meeting held from June 15 to 16, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye. The event also commemorated the 29th anniversary of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation.

The meeting brought together representatives of member states to review the activities of the organisation and discuss strategies aimed at enhancing economic cooperation, trade, investment, and sustainable development among member countries.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Ambassador Ahmed held discussions with Ambassador Musa Kulaklikaya, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, on June 17.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the engagement focused on the existing cordial relations between Nigeria and Türkiye, as well as opportunities for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Both officials explored avenues for strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing collaboration in sectors capable of delivering mutual economic and developmental benefits.
Nigeria’s participation in the D-8 Commission Meeting underscores the country’s continued commitment to multilateral engagement and its efforts to promote stronger partnerships with fellow member states in pursuit of shared prosperity and sustainable growth.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation comprises eight developing countries and serves as a platform for advancing economic collaboration and fostering stronger trade and investment relations among its members.
The information was disclosed in a statement by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
